John's story
He was born in Boston and raised in Seattle (elementary school days) and San Diego (middle and high school days). In San Diego he was introduced to the sport of surfing and by 1967 he was in top competitive form when he was drafted into the Army and subsequently deployed into the Vietnam War. The war was hard and although his competitive days were over, his sport became very soothing post-war as he continued to surf for more than 60 years. In the meantime he began his studies in the healing arts and graduated in the top of his class as a Doctor of Chiropractic, practicing for 31 years in Colorado and 9 more in South Carolina.

John is the father of two daughters, and a grandfather of three granddaughters. He is also the step grandfather of eight (2 more granddaughters and 6 grandsons). He is now retired and lives in Maine with his wife Lindsley and two dogs, Lucy and Skippy.

He has written six books to date, four novels (one aimed at the younger generation), and two non-fiction (a memoir and a travelogue). The latter reflects his post war travels back to the land of his nightmares; Vietnam. He has traveled, even leading groups, back on healing pilgrimages for nearly 20 years.

"A Veteran returns to the land of his Nightmares"

JUST
More than 30 years after being discharged from the Army, Stephen Jackson is still haunted by a vivid and disturbing nightmare. When he finally decides to get some help, the path to the answers he seeks is littered with unexpected obstacles. Like a stone thrown into still water, the ripples of Stephen’s journey will reach out farther than he could ever have imagined, touching the lives of people he has never met. Author John Wesley Fisher tells this tale in a tightly crafted story that addresses the far-reaching consequences of war itself for both those who fought and those whose lives touch theirs.
This book is spiritual pilgrimage for self-knowledge, Eastern wisdom and war healing. It is reportage, based on the author’s personal experiences, on the boons gained by American veterans who return. John offers psychological and historical lessons about war and its aftermath and immerses the reader, along with the characters, in Vietnamese culture. John Wesley Fisher’s novel provides the thrill of a good adventure story while mapping a path to hope and healing, forgiveness and reconciliation for us all. There are many surprises in store for the reader as the action flows throughout this novel revealing many cultural and spirtual realities discovered within Southeast Asia.
John Wesley Fisher is a Vietnam combat veteran who has made his land of nightmares into a mythic arena for healing, adventure and peace-making. He reveals how we can squeeze great blessings out of old curses. This vivid, engaging, surprising and inspiring travelogue, Dak To Rx, is all about Viet Nam during the war and since. He shares stories of deep healing and great gifts of love and friendship with the people and places where he once experienced the most darkness and struggle. Dak To Rx movingly continues what has proven to be John’s lifelong journey; born of war he has transformed it through courage, love, devotion charity and pilgrimage, into a moving and successful quest for peace and healing for everyone touched by that war.
So few Americans travel outside our borders. This allows them to maintain the belief that they are somehow historically exceptional. John has provided a glimpse into a culture and society that is in fact exceptional to those willing to look. John Wesley Fisher holds the bar for healing high, and these pages share the extreme lengths he is willing to go.For those Viet Nam veterans who wish to, but cannot return to directly experience the hospitality and forgiveness that John Fisher has, may you receive it through his writing. And the enormous message from DakTo Rx,“That was then and this is now.”
JUST is a journey through the eyes of a Vietnam Veteran aimed at the younger generation of today. Though intended for young minds, the narrative unfolds like a map for adults, as well, guiding them through the terrain of morality, friendship, and the essence of community. Readers of any age will recognized the universal lessons embedded within the story, lessons that transcend age, teaching us the importance of nurturing a world built on the pillars of camaraderie and safety. JUST is a unique and exceptional way to communicate with young people about the societal challenges facing them as well as all of us in the current time. John Wesley Fisher’s ability to wrap these issues into a story not only presents them well, but also communicates without seeming like just another book about what's wrong in society.
The characters and storyline in JUST keep the reader enthralled as one younger reader mentioned, “I could hardly wait to see what would happen next.” The two key characters, brother and sister (twins) high school students, are brilliant with a strong moral balance as they bring energy to the story, especially after meeting a homeless Vietnam veteran who shares with them important lessons on truth, integrity, courage, and the human condition. And the book is also about surfing and what it takes to be a champion.
